Making homemade soy yogurt at home is actually quick and easy. Let your instant pot do all of the work for you! This recipe combines soy milk with active probiotic cultures and requires only 5 minutes to prepare. This homemade soy yogurt is not only high in protein but also rich and creamy. Top with fruit and granola for a healthy breakfast or use as a plant-based sour cream on top of your favorite burrito.

What are the Benefits of Homemade Soy Yogurt
- Cost effective: Store bought vegan yogurts can be expensive. Making your own yogurt is a great cost-effective way to provide a cheaper and healthier version of store-bought yogurts.
- Protein-packed: Soy milk is a great source of plant-based protein. One cup of regular soy milk provides 12 grams of protein which is more than a glass of cow’s milk.
- No artificial ingredients: This recipe can be made with probiotic cultures and soy milk, eliminating fillers, additives and unnecessary ingredients found in store bought yogurts.
- Make-ahead: You can easily prepare a batch of this yogurt ahead of time and store in the fridge for a quick and convenient breakfast option throughout the week.
- Easy to prepare: All you need is an Instant Pot or yogurt maker. The recipe itself takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare and the rest of the time is waiting for it to finish cooking in the Instant Pot.
- Good source of probiotics: Yogurt is a great source of healthy probiotics which benefit our microbiome and gut health.
Ingredients for Homemade Yogurt

- Organic Soy Milk – provides a creamy texture for the yogurt along with 6 grams of protein per 1/2 cup serving. Make sure that your soy milk contains 2 ingredients (soybeans and water). Your yogurt will not turn out if there are other ingredients. I use the soymilk made by EdenSoy. You can purchase it in most grocery stores or online.
- Active yogurt cultures – I make sure to leave 2 tablespoons of yogurt from a previous batch and mix this into the soy milk. It is a cheap and easy way to provide active cultures. If this is your first-time making yogurt, you can use a few tablespoons of purchased vegan yogurt, just make sure it has live and active cultures. You can also open up a probiotic capsule and mix that in or buy a starter package. I have used the starter packages from Cultures from Health with good results.
- Arrowroot powder – this acts as a thickening agent. You can substitute tapioca powder or cornstarch for the arrowroot powder. If you do not mind a thinner consistency to your yogurt, you can omit altogether.

FAQs for Homemade Soy Yogurt
Sure, you can replace the soy milk with any plant milk of your choice, coconut milk is a good option; its high fat content and will result in a rich and creamy yogurt. Just make sure the milk is free of additives. Using a different plant milk will also change the nutritional content of the recipe.
Of course, the arrowroot powder is a thickening agent. Omitting it will result in a thinner yogurt, but the flavor and nutritional value will be the same.
You have three options for the starter culture:
1. Use 2 tablespoons of yogurt from either a previous batch or from a store-bought vegan yogurt that contains active cultures.
2. Probiotic capsules. Break one capsule per 2 cups of soymilk in place of the starter culture.
3. Purchas a starter culture package. I have used the company Cultures for Health with good results.
As discussed above, the yogurt will keep in the refrigerator for 10-14 days.

Homemade Soy Yogurt
Equipment
- 1 Instant pot or yogurt maker
Ingredients
- 32 ounces (1-quart organic unsweetened soymilk, without additives)
- 2 tablespoons vegan yogurt with active cultures
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder (cornstarch or tapioca starch; optional, helps to thicken)
Instructions
- Divide the milk into 2-quart mason jars (clean and sanitized). You should have 2 cups of milk in each jar.
- Stir 1 tablespoon yogurt into each jar and divide the 1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder between the 2 jars. Avoid using metal utensils as that can react with the cultures.
- Place jars into your Instant Pot directly on the metal surface (do not set on the rack). Place and secure the lid on the Instant Pot and set to 24 hour yogurt setting.
- After 24 hours, remove from the Instant Pot and cover with lids and store in the fridge until ready to use. The yogurt will keep 10-14 days in the fridge.
Notes
- Be sure to use a soy milk that only contains 2 ingredients – water and soybeans. Do not use milk with thickeners or any other additives. I use the brand Eden Soy.
- The arrowroot acts as a thickener. You can omit but your yogurt will be less thick. You can sub in tapioca starch or cornstarch in place of the arrowroot powder.
- Be sure to use a yogurt that has live active cultures. You can also use a vegan yogurt starter culture (I have used Cultures For Health Before with good results). You can also use a probiotic capsule as well.
